Lethbridge has quietly become one of Geelong’s most respected producers, crafting thoughtful, site driven wines that balance old world restraint with modern Australian clarity and precision. Founded by Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis, the estate has built a strong reputation for Chardonnay that reflects the cool maritime climate and ancient soils of the region. The Bartl Chardonnay is named after the vineyard’s grape grower, whose meticulous work in the vineyard plays a huge role in shaping the wine’s character and precision.
The 2023 vintage is beautifully composed and energetic. White peach, grapefruit zest and lemon curd aromas rise from the glass alongside hints of struck flint, roasted cashew and subtle spice. There is a lovely tension running through the palate, with bright acidity and chalky minerality balancing the wine’s creamy texture and generous fruit. Careful oak handling and lees work add depth and savoury complexity without overwhelming the purity of the Chardonnay. The finish is long, saline and finely detailed, lingering with citrus oil and wet stone freshness.
This is a superb food Chardonnay that thrives with elegant dishes. Fresh scallops, roast chicken with tarragon or lobster with beurre blanc would all be sensational pairings. It also shines beside creamy mushroom risotto, grilled prawns or flaky white fish straight from the barbecue. Given a little time in the glass, the wine reveals more layers of savoury nuttiness and mineral detail, making every sip more compelling than the last.
