Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo from Piedmont is a graceful and expressive wine that offers the finesse and structure of Barolo in a more approachable form. Produced by the esteemed Massolino family in the historic village of Serralunga d’Alba, it showcases their mastery of Nebbiolo — a grape capable of delivering haunting perfume, fine tannins and a sense of place like few others. This wine is often described as “a Barolo in spirit,” crafted with the same care and attention but designed for earlier enjoyment.

The fruit is sourced from younger vines in Massolino’s estate vineyards in Serralunga and nearby communes, where calcareous marl soils and high elevations produce fruit of clarity and aromatic lift. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness, followed by maturation in large Slavonian oak casks for about a year. This gentle ageing polishes the tannins while allowing the purity of the Nebbiolo fruit to shine through.

In the glass it shows a brilliant garnet colour with orange highlights. The nose is pure and enticing, revealing rose petal, red cherry, raspberry and spice, with hints of tobacco, earth and truffle. The palate is elegant and medium bodied, with lively acidity framing red fruit, savoury herbs and subtle mineral tones. The tannins are fine yet persistent, leading to a long, graceful finish that captures Nebbiolo’s signature tension and charm.

Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo pairs beautifully with roast duck, braised meats, mushroom risotto or aged cheeses. It also suits Italian classics such as tagliatelle with ragu or veal scaloppine. Delicious young for its brightness and perfume, it will age gracefully for eight to ten years, developing deeper savoury complexity with time.
