From the Lopresti vineyard in Sellicks Hill; 16 months in seasoned oak, 80% French and 20% American. It was another cool year, but this comes off clay in a sunny and warmer site, so it doesn’t lack for depth of fruit and flavour. There’s richness and polish, a splay of dark berries and plum, a little spice and leathery, earthy complexity. There’s a lot of wine here for $25.

From the sun drenched vineyards of McLaren Vale comes a Shiraz that captures the generous spirit of the region. Mitolo Wines was founded in 1999 by Frank Mitolo, whose Italian heritage and passion for great food and wine helped shape the winery’s expressive style. Working alongside renowned winemaker Ben Glaetzer, the estate quickly gained recognition for bold yet balanced wines from carefully selected McLaren Vale vineyards. The Jester range represents the approachable, fruit driven side of the portfolio, showcasing the richness and warmth of the region’s red brown earth and sandy soils.

Deep crimson with inky purple hues, the aromatics are vibrant and generous. Blackberry, dark plum and ripe cherry rise from the glass alongside hints of black pepper, clove and dark chocolate. Subtle oak spice and a touch of liquorice add further depth to the bouquet.

On the palate it is medium to full bodied with a smooth, rounded texture. Dark berry fruit forms the core, supported by soft tannins and balanced acidity that keep the wine lively and food friendly. Layers of spice, cocoa and gentle oak unfold through the mid palate, leading to a long, satisfying finish with lingering plum and pepper notes. It captures the generous character of McLaren Vale Shiraz while remaining approachable and polished.

Pair with grilled ribeye, smoky barbecue meats, slow roasted lamb shoulder or aged cheddar. Enjoy now for its generous fruit and warmth, or cellar comfortably for eight to twelve years as it develops further savoury complexity.
