Following the heights of the 2022 vintage the 2023 is leading the charge once again for a modern linear style of Chenin Blanc. This 2023 throwing out lifted perfume of Calla lily, fresh linen and yellow grapefruit pith. There is hulled almonds and raw cashew cream, kefir acidity and a coconut water freshness. Wet stone, crystal melon and white rind cheese. It has an exfoliating, almost gritty sensation that adds further dimension and texture. A long extended flavour palate hits the nail on the head for the moreish, drinkable quality its gaining a reputation for. Drink now with steamed clams and ginger sauce.

The MMAD Vineyard Blewitt Springs Chenin Blanc from McLaren Vale represents a premium expression of this versatile varietal in Australia. The MMAD Vineyard, situated in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale, is known for producing high-quality wines that capture the unique terroir of the area. Blewitt Springs is especially notable for its cooler microclimate within the larger McLaren Vale region, benefiting from sandy soils and a Mediterranean climate that allow for the cultivation of Chenin Blanc grapes with great intensity and balance.
Chenin Blanc, originally from the Loire Valley in France, has become a globally appreciated grape due to its ability to adapt to a range of climates and styles—from dry and crisp to rich and sweet. In McLaren Vale, and particularly in the cooler Blewitt Springs area, the grape takes on a vibrant and fresh character while retaining its hallmark complexity and ageability.
The MMAD Vineyard Chenin Blanc displays the grape's classic characteristics while also reflecting the distinct influence of the Blewitt Springs terroir. On the nose, it opens with aromas of green apple, pear, and citrus, alongside floral and subtle honeyed notes. There is also a delicate minerality that hints at the sandy soils of the vineyard. On the palate, the wine is bright and lively, with crisp acidity that balances the fruit-forward flavors of apple, quince, and lemon zest. As the wine evolves in the glass, it may reveal additional complexity, including nuances of stone fruits and a slight nuttiness from aging, depending on the vintage. The finish is long, clean, and refreshing, with a persistent minerality that adds depth.
This Chenin Blanc is a perfect example of how this grape variety can thrive in Australian conditions, offering both freshness and richness. The cooler Blewitt Springs sub-region helps preserve the natural acidity of the grape, making the wine well-structured and capable of aging, though it is delightful when enjoyed young for its vibrant fruit and floral qualities.
MMAD Vineyard, with its focus on meticulous viticulture and minimal intervention in the winery, ensures that their Chenin Blanc reflects both the natural characteristics of the variety and the unique conditions of McLaren Vale. This commitment to quality makes their Chenin Blanc stand out as a premier example of the varietal from Australia.
