2024 MMAD Vineyard Blewitt Springs Rose, McLaren Vale

The second release of rosé for MMAD, and from all varieties on the old vineyard: grenache, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and chenin blanc. Like the 2023, the proportions are a mystery, and lifted herbal notes of cabernet again lead the aromatics, but the colour has been dialled down to a classic coral pink. Grenache lends red-fruited detail and floral lilt. There’s spice, too. And flavour and texture aplenty. That’s also like the 2023, but here the balance, detail and vibrancy are much more finely tuned. Excellent.

MMAD Vineyard Blewitt Springs Rosé is a sophisticated, savoury dry rosé made from an unusual and inspired blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc, all grown on the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs. The vineyard, with plantings dating back to 1939, is one of McLaren Vale’s most celebrated sites, offering elevation, ocean influence and old vines that deliver intense flavour with natural elegance.

The winemaking team of Adam Wadewitz, Martin Shaw, Michael Hill Smith MW and David LeMire MW have crafted a rosé that celebrates subtlety over sweetness. Each variety plays a distinct role: Shiraz for spice and structure, Cabernet for lift and red berry brightness, and Chenin for its nervy acidity and texture.

Fermented in old oak and handled delicately, the wine is pale and dry, with aromas of wild red berries, grapefruit pith, dried rose petals and a faint herbal lift. The palate is fresh and finely structured with soft red fruits, white pepper, blood orange and a savoury, mineral finish.

Pair it with grilled swordfish, roast spatchcock with za’atar, charred asparagus with parmesan, or a beetroot and walnut salad. It’s a rosé for serious wine lovers, equally delicious now or with a year or two in bottle.
