Nautilus Estate Chardonnay from Marlborough is a quietly elegant wine that balances ripe fruit with cool-climate precision. While Sauvignon Blanc is the region’s signature, Chardonnay from Marlborough — especially when crafted with restraint and detail, like this one — is a bit of a well-kept secret. Nautilus has long focused on texture and refinement over showy fruit, and this release is a standout for those who enjoy Chardonnay with energy, structure and subtle complexity.
Fruit is sourced primarily from the Renwick and Yarrum vineyards, where riverbed soils and cool nights allow for long, even ripening. The wine is fermented with wild yeasts in French oak barriques (about 20 percent new), with full malolactic fermentation and 10 months on lees. The result is a Chardonnay that’s both savoury and vibrant — layered but not heavy.
It opens with aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, grilled hazelnut and a hint of flint. On the palate, it’s finely textured and medium bodied, showing nectarine, lemon curd, roasted cashew and a gentle creaminess from lees ageing. A mineral line runs through the wine, giving it shape and a clean, persistent finish.
Food pairing: perfect with roast chicken and tarragon, seared scallops, grilled swordfish, or a warm salad of pumpkin and pine nuts. Also lovely with alpine cheeses or a classic lemon risotto.
Cellar potential: drinking well now, but will evolve over the next 5 to 7 years, gaining roundness and nutty depth.
