Oakridge LVS Hazeldene Pinot Gris is a beautifully textured and expressive white from the Yarra Valley, capturing the variety’s subtle orchard fruit charm through the lens of a cool-climate site. Oakridge, founded in 1978, has become one of the region’s leading producers, known for its precision winemaking and ability to highlight individual vineyard characters. The LVS (Local Vineyard Series) range focuses on single-site expressions, and the Hazeldene Vineyard is one of their prized sources for aromatic whites, situated on elevated slopes in the upper Yarra.

The Hazeldene site benefits from cool morning mists, long daylight hours, and a temperate growing season that allows Pinot Gris to ripen slowly and evenly. The soils are a mix of volcanic and clay loams, which help retain moisture while encouraging good drainage, giving the wines both freshness and gentle weight. The fruit is harvested at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed and fermented at cool temperatures, with some lees stirring to build texture and complexity without overt oak influence. This approach results in a wine that balances freshness, fruit purity, and a touch of richness.

In the glass, it shows a pale straw colour with a hint of green. Aromas of nashi pear, white peach, and honeysuckle mingle with subtle citrus blossom and wet stone. The palate is medium bodied and silky, with layers of pear, melon, and gentle spice supported by crisp acidity and a lightly creamy texture from the lees work. It’s refined and elegant, offering both immediate appeal and subtle depth.

This Pinot Gris pairs beautifully with dishes like pan-seared scallops, grilled calamari with lemon and herbs, Vietnamese chicken salad, or soft cheeses such as brie and chèvre. Its clean acidity also makes it a refreshing match for lightly spiced dishes and summer vegetables. Best enjoyed young to capture its vibrant aromatics, though it will hold well for a few years in bottle.
