High on the slope above Meursault, Blagny Sous le Dos d’Ane brings a noticeably cooler, more mineral expression to the village, and in 2023 that freshness is front and centre. Olivier Leflaive’s Récolte approach focuses on carefully selected Premier Cru fruit, handled with precision to highlight site rather than weight, and this vineyard naturally leans toward tension and line over richness.
Aromatics are finely detailed, lemon zest, grapefruit and green apple leading, with white peach sitting quietly behind. There is a distinct chalky, almost stony note, alongside subtle hints of almond and spice that add complexity without softening the profile.
The palate is tighter and more linear than classic Meursault, medium bodied with a firm line of acidity that drives the wine. Citrus and orchard fruit flow through cleanly, supported by a gentle texture from lees work, while the finish carries a long, mineral edge with a lightly savoury, almost saline note.
Olivier Leflaive’s careful élevage keeps everything in balance, oak used sparingly to build structure rather than flavour, allowing the vineyard’s cooler character to remain the focus.
This is a brilliant match for dishes that favour freshness and precision. Grilled fish, scallops or chicken with herbs all work beautifully, and it also pairs effortlessly with vegetarian dishes like asparagus with lemon, zucchini and ricotta tart or a simple risotto with spring vegetables.
It has excellent ageing potential, developing more nutty and honeyed complexity over the next eight to twelve years while holding its crisp, mineral line.
