Bright magenta-splashed crimson in the glass, with an impressive plummy depth and intensity to its aromatic profile. Fruit notes of dark plum, goji berry and dark cherry fruits meld with hints of baking spices, earth, plum conserve, wood spice, dark chocolate and panforte. Layers of spice and pure plum, and berry fruits on the palate. It shows excellent depth and savoury nuance on the back end and makes for delightful drinking.

The Penfolds Bin 138 GSM from the Barossa Valley is a richly layered red that celebrates the region’s long tradition of blending Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. First released in 1992, it has become one of Penfolds’ most distinctive wines, crafted from old-vine Barossa fruit, some of which dates back to the 1960s. Unlike many of the estate’s more structured Cabernet and Shiraz bottlings, Bin 138 is about generosity, perfume and approachability, reflecting the Mediterranean roots of the blend while retaining Penfolds’ trademark polish.
In the glass, it is deep ruby with purple highlights. The bouquet is expressive and complex, showing raspberry, plum and blackberry alongside spice, violet, liquorice and earthy undertones. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with juicy dark fruits layered over supple tannins and bright acidity. Notes of pepper, cocoa and savoury herbs add depth, while a gentle oak influence provides subtle spice and texture. The finish is long and balanced, showcasing both vibrancy and richness.
Food pairings highlight its versatility and warmth: roast lamb with rosemary, chargrilled beef, duck with plum glaze, or Mediterranean vegetable dishes such as ratatouille. Semi-hard cheeses like Manchego or aged Gouda also pair beautifully. While approachable in its youth, Bin 138 has the structure to cellar for 8 to 12 years, developing savoury, earthy and truffle-like complexity with time.
