Deep crimson with a strong aromatic profile of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry studded with mixed spice, blackforest cake, roasting meats, panforte, dark chocolate and earth. Plenty of depth and latent fruit power with this release; perhaps a little more power than last year's model, with fine, strong tannins supporting the fruit beautifully. A strong release for the Bin 28 Shiraz.

The Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is one of the most recognisable and enduring wines in the Penfolds stable, first released in 1959. Named after the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, originally the main source of fruit, it has since evolved into a multi-regional expression while still anchored in Barossa’s generosity. Bin 28 showcases warm-climate Shiraz in all its richness, crafted with Penfolds’ hallmark polish and ability to age gracefully.
In the glass, it is deep crimson with purple highlights. The nose is bold and expressive, with blackberry, mulberry and plum layered with liquorice, mocha, cedar and sweet spice. The palate is full-bodied and plush, with concentrated dark fruit framed by velvety tannins and a fine acid line. Hints of chocolate, pepper and savoury oak add complexity, while the finish is long, smooth and satisfying, a reflection of both Barossa power and Penfolds refinement.
Food pairings suit its richness and weight: slow-braised beef cheeks, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, chargrilled ribeye, or mushroom and truffle pie. Aged hard cheeses like clothbound cheddar also work beautifully. While approachable in its youth, Bin 28 has the structure to cellar for 15 years or more, developing earthy, leathery and savoury dimensions over time.
