Pierro Nunc Tempus Est Chenin Blanc from Margaret River is a beautifully expressive and quietly complex wine that shows just how refined this Loire Valley variety can be in Western Australia’s maritime climate. Dr Mike Peterkin, the visionary founder of Pierro, is one of Margaret River’s true pioneers, known for his meticulous vineyard management and dedication to crafting wines of elegance and texture. The Latin name Nunc Tempus Est, meaning “now is the time,” reflects both Peterkin’s confidence in the quality of Chenin Blanc from his vineyards and his philosophy that great wines should be enjoyed in the moment.
The fruit for Nunc Tempus Est comes from mature vines planted on the estate’s Willyabrup vineyards, where gravelly loam soils and cooling ocean breezes create the perfect conditions for slow, even ripening. The grapes are hand picked at different stages of ripeness to balance freshness with richness. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in seasoned French oak, followed by time on lees to build texture and mouthfeel. The combination of these techniques results in a Chenin Blanc that marries bright fruit with layered complexity and a long, polished finish.
In the glass it shows a pale lemon hue with green tints. The aroma is delicate and inviting, offering pear, quince and lemon blossom along with hints of honeysuckle, lanolin and subtle oak spice. On the palate it is medium bodied and beautifully balanced, with flavours of apple, melon, citrus and gentle almond cream framed by lively acidity. The texture is supple yet fresh, finishing with clean mineral length and a touch of savoury depth that keeps you coming back for another sip.
This Chenin Blanc pairs wonderfully with seafood such as grilled snapper, scallops or oysters, as well as roasted chicken, mild curries or soft cheeses. It also complements dishes with rich sauces or creamy textures thanks to its refreshing acidity. While vibrant and delicious now, it will develop gracefully over the next eight to ten years, gaining notes of honey, toast and nuttiness with bottle age.
