Really pale ruby hue. The flavours are reticent, however, a good airing reveals menthol, red currants, cherries with a pop of sweetness and alpine herbs. The palate is light-weight, the tannins sinewy if faint and acidity remains in charge. There’s not a great deal of depth within but it’s a pleasant drink and best in the short term.

Port Phillip Red Hill Pinot Noir from the Mornington Peninsula is an elegant and expressive wine that perfectly captures the essence of this cool-climate region. Known for its ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir, the Mornington Peninsula’s cool maritime climate and diverse soils create a perfect environment for producing wines that are both refined and full of character. Port Phillip Estate, a winery celebrated for its commitment to quality and sustainability, crafts wines that showcase the true potential of the region, and their Red Hill Pinot Noir is a standout example.

The Red Hill Pinot Noir is made from hand-harvested fruit sourced from the estate’s top vineyards, located on the slopes of the Red Hill region. The cool climate ensures slow ripening of the grapes, allowing them to retain their vibrant acidity while developing complex, nuanced flavors. Winemaker Paul Paturzo’s approach is minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the vineyard to shine through. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, which adds subtle layers of spice and complexity while complementing the fruit profile.

In the glass, Port Phillip Red Hill Pinot Noir has a beautiful ruby-red color that reflects its vibrancy and youthful freshness. The nose is aromatic and complex, offering a bouquet of red fruit aromas like cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, along with floral notes of violet and rose petals. There are also hints of spice, with subtle undertones of cinnamon and clove, as well as earthy notes of mushroom and forest floor that add depth and intrigue.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with smooth, silky tannins and a refined texture. The red fruit flavors are fresh and lively, with juicy cherry, raspberry, and cranberry taking the lead. The wine’s natural acidity provides balance and freshness, while the subtle oak influence adds a touch of spice and richness. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering fruit and a slight earthy note, leaving a satisfying, complex aftertaste.

Port Phillip Red Hill Pinot Noir is a versatile and food-friendly wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its bright fruit and silky tannins make it an excellent match for roasted poultry, such as duck or chicken, as well as grilled meats like lamb or pork. It also pairs wonderfully with earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, charcuterie, or soft cheeses like Brie or goat cheese. Whether enjoyed on its own or with a meal, this Pinot Noir is an elegant and approachable wine that is perfect for any occasion.
