Printhie Wines was established by Jim and Ruth Swift in 1996 when they planted the first vines on the family's property near Molong in the Orange region. Their sons Ed and Dave returned to the family business in the early 2000s and have overseen the expansion of the estate to 33ha Today four estate vineyards span elevations from 630 to 1,070 metres in a region defined by altitude. The continental climate and long, cool growing season produce wines of natural aromatic lift and restrained structure. With experienced winemaker Drew Tuckwell at the helm since 2008, Printhie has become regarded as one of the region's most consistent producers across its wide range of wines.
The Mountain Range Merlot is made from fruit grown in the Phalaris vineyard. Sitting at an altitude of 640 metres and close to the winery, the site gives the variety enough warmth to ripen fully while the cool Orange nights preserve the aromatic freshness that defines the region. At this elevation, Merlot finds a good balance between ripe fruit and freshness without tipping into the jam end of its spectrum.
Bright red cherry and plum on the nose with darker fruit underneath — cigar box, leather and a waft of warm winter spice. Medium-bodied with balanced tannins and a moreish, dry finish.
Good with a slow-cooked beef and mushroom ragu with pappardelle, or a simple roast chicken with herbs. The wine's red fruit and gentle spice are good company for anything savoury and straightforward.
