Quartz Reef was founded by renowned Austrian-born winemaker Rudi Bauer, a pioneer of Central Otago who brought with him deep experience in biodynamics and a philosophy rooted in harmony with nature. The estate’s vineyards are Demeter certified, and every aspect of farming and winemaking is carried out with sustainability, energy, and expression of place in mind.
The fruit for this single vineyard Pinot Gris is hand harvested from the estate’s Bendigo vines, grown on glacial soils with gravel, schist, and clay. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts, and a portion of the wine is aged on lees in older barrels to enhance texture and depth while preserving freshness.
In the glass, it offers enticing aromas of ripe pear, quince, honeysuckle, and a hint of nutmeg. The palate is luscious yet poised, with layers of baked apple, citrus zest, and creamy lees richness underpinned by fine acidity and a stony mineral finish.
