Rusden Chookshed Zinfandel from Vine Vale in the Barossa Valley is a rich, generous, and unapologetically bold red wine that showcases the rare and wild side of Zinfandel in Australia. Crafted by the Canute family at their small, family owned estate, Chookshed is a wine full of personality, reflecting the sandy soils, old vines, and hand crafted approach that define Rusden’s wines.
Rusden is one of the few producers in Australia working seriously with Zinfandel. The Chookshed vineyard was originally planted with mixed varieties, but when the Canute family realised they had Zinfandel among the vines, they embraced it wholeheartedly. Vine Vale’s deep sandy soils are perfect for Zinfandel, moderating ripeness and giving the wine an aromatic lift and savoury edge that sets it apart from bigger, heavier examples elsewhere.
Winemaking is simple and traditional. The fruit is handpicked, wild fermented, and basket pressed before being matured in a mix of seasoned French and American oak. No fining or filtration is used, preserving the natural texture and richness of the wine.
In the glass, Rusden Chookshed Zinfandel bursts with ripe blackberry, dark plum, black cherry, spice cake, and hints of anise and cocoa. The palate is full bodied and plush but carries a thread of bright acidity that keeps the richness in check. Fine grained tannins wrap around layers of dark fruit and spice, finishing long, savoury, and satisfying.
This is a Zinfandel that pairs perfectly with slow cooked brisket, spicy sausages, or smoky barbecued ribs. It is a wine that wears its boldness with pride but does so with balance, charm, and unmistakable Barossa soul.
