Sound of White Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough is a sophisticated and textural expression of this classic New Zealand variety, crafted by winemaker Matt Ward under the Catalina Sounds label. The wine comes from the Sound of White Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley, one of Marlborough’s most picturesque and elevated subregions. Here, long sunny days and cool nights produce grapes of exceptional intensity and balance, while the clay and limestone soils give the wine a distinctive mineral backbone.
Matt Ward’s approach to the Sound of White range is about finesse and depth rather than overt fruitiness. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are hand harvested, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in seasoned French oak barrels. The wine is then aged on its lees for several months with gentle stirring to build texture and complexity. This hands off method adds richness and weight while preserving the clarity and vibrancy that define Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
In the glass it glows pale gold with green reflections. The aroma opens with citrus zest, white peach and passionfruit, layered with notes of fresh herbs, almond and flint from barrel fermentation. The palate is silky and expressive, showing ripe stone fruit, lemon curd and subtle spice supported by bright acidity and a long, mineral finish. The oak influence is perfectly judged, bringing harmony and structure without overpowering the fruit.
Sound of White Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with grilled lobster, roast chicken, scallops or creamy pasta with lemon and herbs. It is also an excellent match for soft cheeses or lightly spiced dishes. The wine is delicious now for its balance and complexity but will continue to evolve gracefully for up to six years, developing layers of honey, toast and savoury depth with age.
