The 2023 Barbera d'Alba is such a classy wine. Lifted aromatics and polished tannins immediately convey finesse. Crushed flowers, vibrant red/purplish fruit, rose petal and blood orange all run through this wonderfully polished, sensual Barbera. The 2023 is not as exuberant as the 2022, but it more than makes up for that with its elegance.
Nicola Oberto and Stefania Drocco exude all the enthusiasm and passion of the younger generation in Piedmont. That comes through in wines that are increasingly pedigreed. Two thousand twenty-one was not without its challenges here. Frost wiped out 50% of the production in Rocche dell’Annunziata. As for the wines, they are positively stellar. The Nebbiolo harvest took place from October 6 to 21, on the later side for the year. Readers who have not discovered these wines owe it to themselves to do so. Not only are the wines brilliant, they also remain very fairly priced.

Trediberri Barbera d’Alba from Piedmont is a juicy energetic red that captures all the charm and vibrancy of this beloved variety while offering serious drinkability. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards around La Morra and Vicoforte, this wine is a fresh and honest take on Barbera with the kind of brightness and depth that make it irresistible at the table.
The team at Trediberri led by father and son Federico and Nicola Oberto along with their friend Vladimiro Rambaldi approaches Barbera with the same level of care and terroir focus as their Barolo. The fruit for this wine is grown on clay and limestone soils which give Barbera its trademark acidity and red berry character while adding texture and lift.
Winemaking is straightforward and transparent. The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats then aged in stainless steel and a small portion of used oak to retain freshness and let the fruit shine. There is no heavy extraction no manipulation and no flashiness—just pure expressive Barbera made to be enjoyed.
In the glass it opens with aromas of red cherry raspberry violet and a touch of spice. The palate is medium bodied and silky with lively acidity soft tannins and a clean savoury finish. It is both refreshing and satisfying the kind of red that works beautifully with pizza pasta grilled meats or even a simple wedge of Pecorino.
Trediberri’s Barbera d’Alba is not only a fantastic introduction to their range but also one of the best value reds in the region. It delivers authenticity charm and sheer drinkability in every glass.
