From old vine parcels around Fuissé, this Mâcon Fuissé shows just how serious the Mâconnais can be in the right hands. Vincent Girardin’s shift toward a more restrained, terroir focused style really suits these warmer sites, keeping the natural generosity of the fruit while bringing in clarity and line.
The 2023 vintage is open and expressive. Aromatics lead with ripe pear, white peach and nectarine, backed by lemon zest and a touch of citrus peel. There is a gentle savoury layer building underneath, almond, hazelnut and a hint of spice, with a subtle stony note that adds definition.
On the palate it is medium to full bodied with a smooth, rounded texture, but there is a clean line of acidity that keeps everything balanced. Stone fruit sits at the core, supported by restrained oak that adds shape without heaviness. The finish is fresh and composed, with a lightly savoury, nutty edge and a mineral line that lingers.
Girardin’s winemaking is measured and precise, careful pressing and thoughtful élevage allowing the old vine character to come through while maintaining freshness.
This is a brilliant match for seafood with a bit of richness. Think grilled prawns with garlic butter, seared scallops, or a whole roast fish with fennel and herbs. It also works beautifully with dishes like crab linguine, prawn and saffron risotto, or even crispy potatoes with rosemary and aioli, where the wine’s texture and acidity keep everything in check.
Drinking beautifully now for its generosity and balance, it will continue to evolve over the next five to eight years, picking up more complexity while holding its line.
