Old vines across Pouilly Fuissé give this wine a bit more depth and concentration, and Vincent Girardin handles it with a restrained, terroir focused approach that keeps everything in balance. Since refining his style, Girardin has brought more clarity and precision to his whites, and this cuvée shows how well that works in the Mâconnais.
The 2023 vintage is open and generous without losing freshness. Aromatics lead with ripe pear, white peach and nectarine, backed by lemon zest and a touch of citrus peel. There is a gentle savoury layer, almond, hazelnut and a hint of spice, with a subtle stony note tying it together.
On the palate it is medium to full bodied with a smooth, rounded texture, but there is a clean line of acidity running through it. Stone fruit sits at the core, supported by well judged oak that adds shape and a touch of warmth. The finish is long and composed, with a lightly savoury, nutty edge and a fresh mineral line that keeps everything in check.
Girardin’s winemaking is measured and precise, careful pressing and thoughtful élevage allowing the old vine character to show while maintaining balance.
This is a great match for seafood with a bit of richness. Think grilled prawns with garlic butter, seared scallops, or a whole roast fish with fennel and herbs. It also works beautifully with dishes like crab linguine, a prawn and saffron risotto, or even crispy potatoes with rosemary and aioli, where the wine’s texture and acidity keep everything in line.
Drinking beautifully now for its generosity and balance, it will continue to evolve over the next six to ten years, picking up more complexity while holding its structure.
