2023 Wilson DJW Riesling, Clare Valley

From a vineyard in Polish Hill (River) planted in 1997. Wilson’s say no need to add any acid in 2023, but also, the choice was made not to de-acdidfy either. Both good things. To me, it indicates that the vineyard produced wines of balance.

Juicy lime, pink grapefruit, a mint/aniseed top note, plus a little exotic spice. It’s a fleshy wine of flavour and impact, and don’t mind me, but slightly peanutty, with a Thai salad sort of thing happening, which I like. It’s also chalky and quite complex and different in its delivery, with a nutty green mango finish of excellent length. I like this. Zesty. Interesting. Juicy.

A unique site inspired the Wilsons to plant here in ’97 and delineate this single-vineyard wine. It's juicy and fresh, easy to get stuck into. Redolent of ripe lime, grapefruit and red apple with a faint minty, herbal lift – an attractive introduction to the wine. The palate is supple, straightforward, a little loose-knit, with more red apple fruitiness here, a touch of guava and green mango, a faint trail of green almond in the mix lending gentle savouriness. A pleasing, accessible expression, with some quiet complexity on its side.
