From the heart of Rueda, Martínsancho is the benchmark wine of Angel Rodríguez, one of the region’s quiet pioneers of old vine Verdejo. His vineyards, many of them pre phylloxera and planted on sandy, gravelly soils, have survived where others did not, giving naturally low yields and a depth of character that sets this wine apart. Farming is organic and the approach in the cellar is minimal, all about preserving the identity of these remarkable sites.
The aromatics are immediately distinctive. Lemon and lime sit alongside green apple and a touch of white peach, but it is the herbal edge that defines Verdejo here, fennel, fresh cut herbs and a subtle aniseed note. There is also a faint mineral thread, a dry, dusty character that speaks of those sandy soils.
On the palate it is crisp and focused, with bright acidity giving it real drive. The fruit is clean and precise, moving from citrus into a slightly more textured mid palate before finishing dry with a gently bitter, almond skin note that is classic for the variety. There is a savoury edge that keeps it interesting and very food friendly.
Winemaking is handled with a light touch, stainless steel playing a key role to preserve freshness, with lees work adding just enough texture without softening the wine’s natural tension.
This is a natural partner for seafood and lighter dishes. Grilled prawns, calamari, or a simple plate of fish with olive oil and lemon all work beautifully. It also pairs well with tapas, especially dishes with garlic, herbs or a bit of salt.
Best enjoyed young while its freshness and varietal character are at their peak, offering a pure and authentic expression of Rueda Verdejo.
