Innovation has always sat comfortably alongside tradition at Best's Great Western. Established in 1866, this historic Victorian winery is one of Australia's most respected family owned producers, famous for preserving old vines and championing lesser known varieties. Under the guidance of winemaker Justin Purser, Best's continues to explore new expressions of classic grapes, and this Blanc de Noir is a perfect example of that adventurous spirit.
Crafted from Pinot Meunier grown in the cool climate of Great Western, the wine is made as a white wine from red grapes, with minimal skin contact preserving its pale colour while capturing the variety's bright fruit character and texture. The result is something refreshingly different from the more familiar Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio styles, offering both aromatic appeal and genuine complexity.
Pale straw with the faintest silver hue, it opens with aromas of white peach, pear, red apple and citrus blossom. Subtle notes of wild strawberry, honeysuckle and fresh pastry sit beneath the fruit, adding intrigue without overwhelming the wine's freshness. The palate is lively and beautifully textured, combining crisp citrus and orchard fruits with a gentle creaminess. Bright natural acidity keeps everything focused, while a delicate mineral edge carries through to a long, refreshing finish.
A wonderful match for freshly shucked oysters, salt and pepper squid, kingfish crudo, prawn and fennel risotto or a warm goat's cheese tart. Vegetarian dishes featuring roasted pumpkin, ricotta and herbs also work beautifully. Enjoy its youthful vibrancy over the next three to five years. Distinctive, versatile and immensely drinkable, it showcases another fascinating side of Great Western and demonstrates why Best's remains one of Australia's most innovative and enduring wineries.
