High in Panzano in Chianti, where altitude and exposure bring a little extra tension to Sangiovese, Candialle is one of those quietly impressive estates that flies under the radar. Founded by Josephin and Jarkko Peränen, the vineyard work is organic and meticulous, with a strong focus on low yields and healthy soils. La Misse comes from younger vines and select parcels, offering a more immediate window into the estate while still carrying that sense of place.
The aromatics are bright and expressive, sour cherry and red plum at the core, with a lift of violet and dried herbs. There is a gentle savoury layer building underneath, a touch of earth, spice and a hint of tobacco that adds depth without weighing the wine down.
On the palate it is medium bodied and finely balanced, with fresh acidity giving the wine its energy and classic Chianti line. Tannins are present but well shaped, framing the fruit rather than dominating it. Flavours move from red berries into more savoury territory, finishing with notes of spice, herbs and a subtle mineral edge.
Winemaking is handled with a light, thoughtful touch, aiming to preserve purity and structure while allowing the vineyard character to come through clearly. The result is a Chianti that feels both traditional and precise, with a modern sense of balance.
This is made for the table. Pappardelle with ragù, grilled lamb, or a simple pizza with tomato and basil all work beautifully, and it also pairs well with roasted vegetables and olive oil driven dishes.
Drinking well now with a bit of air, it will continue to evolve over the next five to eight years, gaining more savoury complexity while maintaining its freshness.
