In the alpine region of Alto Adige, Cantina Terlano has built a reputation as one of Italy’s great white wine producers. The cooperative was founded in 1893 in the village of Terlano, where vineyards cling to steep slopes beneath the Dolomite mountains. Over the decades the winery has become famous for its meticulous approach to viticulture and for producing wines with remarkable longevity. The soils here are unusual in Italy, formed from ancient volcanic porphyry rock that gives the wines their distinctive mineral character and structure.

Terlaner Classico is the estate’s signature white blend, traditionally combining Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and a smaller portion of Sauvignon Blanc. Each variety contributes its own character to the wine. Pinot Bianco provides structure and elegance, Chardonnay brings body and texture, while Sauvignon Blanc adds aromatic lift and freshness. The grapes are sourced from hillside vineyards between 300 and 900 metres above sea level, where warm sunny days and cool alpine nights allow the fruit to ripen slowly and develop layered complexity.

The wine shows a pale straw colour with bright golden reflections. Aromas open with white peach, pear and lemon zest followed by hints of apple blossom, alpine herbs and crushed stone. With time in the glass subtle notes of almond, gentle spice and a faint smoky mineral character emerge, a hallmark of the volcanic soils around Terlano. The palate is vibrant yet textured, offering flavours of citrus, orchard fruit and a delicate savoury edge carried by bright acidity. There is a beautiful balance between freshness and richness that leads to a long, clean finish with lingering mineral notes.

It is particularly well suited to dishes such as grilled river fish, seafood risotto, roast chicken or lightly creamy pasta where the wine’s freshness and texture complement the flavours.
