From one of Alto Adige’s benchmark co operatives, Cantina Terlano has built a reputation on precision and longevity, even with varieties that are often treated more simply elsewhere. Set against the foothills of the Dolomites, the vineyards benefit from warm days and cool alpine nights, with porphyry rich soils giving the wines both texture and a distinctive mineral edge.

The 2024 Pinot Grigio is anything but basic. Aromatics are clean and lifted, pear, green apple and white peach with a touch of citrus zest. There is a subtle almond note and a faint herbal lift, alongside a stony freshness that hints at the mountain origin.

On the palate it sits comfortably in the medium bodied range, with more depth than most examples of the variety. Orchard fruit carries through with a gentle, rounded texture, but it is the acidity that keeps everything in line, giving the wine drive and a crisp, mineral finish. There is a lightly savoury edge that adds interest and length.

Terlano’s winemaking is all about clarity and balance, careful handling and time on lees building texture without losing freshness, resulting in a Pinot Grigio that feels composed and quietly complex.

This is where it really opens up at the table. Think spaghetti vongole with garlic and chilli, grilled calamari with lemon and parsley, or a simple plate of prawns with olive oil and sea salt. It also works beautifully with dishes like prosciutto and melon, a light seafood risotto, or even crispy potato with rosemary and aioli, the wine’s freshness cutting through and lifting the flavours.

Drinking beautifully now for its brightness and texture, it will hold over the next few years while developing a little more savoury nuance.
