James and Kimberly Cooter are second-generation McLaren Vale winemakers. James's father Colin co-founded Lengs & Cooter in 1992, while Kimberly learned her craft from her father Walter Clappis, the veteran winemaker behind Ingoldby and The Hedonist.
They purchased a property with an established vineyard in Whites Valley near Willunga in 2012. The vineyard is on ironstone rich clay loam over limestone, and Shiraz was planted here in 1996. The 2024 season started with dry conditions before significant midsummer rains, followed by a notably dry run from late summer into autumn. Fruit was mostly de-stemmed and fermented in open top fermenters. Pressed into seasoned oak for an eight-month rest, then bottled without fining. The approach is all about purity of expression.
Deep crimson, the nose is fragrant and detailed with dark plum, blackberry, ironstone mineral and a fine spice thread. The palate is medium to full-bodied with good concentration, supple tannins and a long, savoury finish.
A bright, expressive and juicy wine of genuine character from a small family producer. Open before firing up the BBQ, and you’ll need to reach for the second bottle before the steaks are done.
Drink now through 2032.
