Good breadth, presence and freshness, with a distinct green almond and flinty sulfide vein running through the wine. Vigorous aeration helps integrate the savoury elements with the sweet fruit. The palate has impressive weight and texture, and the wine blooms beautifully in the glass. Serve with an umami-filled meal like mixed cheese soufflé or mushroom risotto to showcase its layers, unfurl its length and bring out its best.

Dalwood Estate Chardonnay from the Hunter Valley is a refined, modern expression of this historic region, combining bright fruit, fine texture and subtle complexity. The Dalwood vineyard, first planted in 1828 on the banks of the Hunter River, is one of Australia’s oldest continuously producing sites. Today it forms part of the Hungerford Hill portfolio, crafted under the guidance of winemaker Bryan Currie, whose thoughtful, minimal intervention style allows the vineyard’s character to shine through with clarity and elegance.

The fruit is sourced from Dalwood’s riverbank vineyards, where sandy loam and alluvial soils provide excellent drainage and a delicate mineral edge. The warm Hunter Valley climate, moderated by cool coastal breezes, allows the grapes to ripen evenly, developing depth of flavour while maintaining natural acidity. The grapes are hand picked and whole bunch pressed before fermentation, with a portion matured in French oak to build texture and complexity. Lees stirring adds a creamy richness and roundness while keeping the wine fresh and balanced.

In the glass it shows pale straw with green tints. The aroma opens with white peach, citrus blossom and melon, complemented by notes of cashew, almond and vanilla. On the palate it is medium bodied and refined, showing flavours of stone fruit, lemon curd and nougat supported by bright acidity and a clean mineral line. The finish is long, elegant and refreshing, showcasing both the charm of the Hunter Valley and the finesse of modern Australian Chardonnay.

Dalwood Estate Chardonnay pairs perfectly with grilled fish, roast chicken, creamy pasta with herbs or fresh seafood. It also complements soft cheeses and light Mediterranean dishes. Best enjoyed now for its brightness and purity, it will also evolve gracefully over five years, developing richer nutty and toasty notes with time.
