Lifted aromas of grapefruit pith, white flowers, just-ripe white stone fruit, melon rind and nuts. Pithy, punchy and with lovely drive and power. Full of citrus, nectarine and tangy acidity, along with integrated oak and a drying lick of phenolics on the finish. Long, layered and sophisticated gear 24 Jan 2025 Drink 2025–2032

Deep Woods Estate Chardonnay from Margaret River is a consistently outstanding expression of Western Australian terroir, striking the perfect balance between finesse and flavour. Sourced from the Wilyabrup subregion, where cooling sea breezes and ancient gravelly soils provide ideal growing conditions for Chardonnay, this wine has become a benchmark for modern Margaret River style.
Winemaker Julian Langworthy is known for his restrained, yet expressive approach to Chardonnay. Fruit is handpicked in the early morning for freshness, then gently whole-bunch pressed and fermented in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barriques. Wild fermentation, minimal sulphur use and regular bâtonnage add complexity, texture and depth without ever overpowering the purity of the fruit.
The result is a Chardonnay with lifted citrus blossom, white peach and nectarine aromatics, underscored by struck match, flint and hints of toasted cashew. On the palate, it’s tightly wound, showing vibrant acidity and a mineral-driven line that supports layers of stone fruit, lemon curd and subtle oak spice. There’s a saline snap on the finish that speaks to its coastal origin.
Perfect with seared scallops, grilled marron, or a creamy chicken and tarragon pie.
