Exceptional medium-bodied Cabernet with intense and concentrated fruit
This comes off the original vines that were planted on the Deep Woods and Abbey Vale properties. So it sits within the Yallingup sub-region. Aromas of intense blackcurrant, bay leaf, black olive, and a lashing of dark chocolate impose themselves on the senses immediately. The palate is exceptional. It’s a deeply concentrated and intensely presented wine, and yet it’s an effortless and almost medium-bodied structure that carries forward. Dry, savoury, slightly chalky tannins, perfectly integrated oak, complete what is an exceptional wine. Drink to 2044.
97 points Ray Jordan Wine Review 2027
This is latest release of the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Deep Wood Estate, with the previous vintages consistently rated 95-97 points by Halliday Wine Companion, The Wine Advocate and James Suckling. Here’s what Senior winemaker Matt Buchan sees in a glass of the 2024:
“In the glass, the wine is deep purple with a dark cherry hue. The nose is opulent and dark, with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, charred anise and cedar. The palate opens with cassis, black forest and plum, with a bitter cacao dustiness layered throughout. The power and range of sweet, ripe tannin are in harmony with the fruit and will ensure the wine’s bright future.”
More about this wine
The 2024 vintage is again made from select parcels in two Yallingup Hills vineyards planted in the mid-1980s, Deep Woods Estate (block 3) and Abbey Vale (block 9).
Each block was fermented separately for 10 to 14 days on skins, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 26 °C while utilising various maceration techniques to build the tannin profile and colour. The fermented wine matured for 14-16 months in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques before the final blend was assembled based on sensory evaluation.
About this producer
The 1987 established Deep Woods Estate has over the years shown remarkably high consistency to its well-regarded wines while the production has been growing at a steady pace over the years. Today, the 16-hectare home vineyard in Yallingup Hills is complemented by numerous contract growers across the length of the Margaret River region and the future looks assured after long-term investments in vineyard and winery renovations since the estate became part of the highly ambitious Fogarty Hall Wine Group in 2005.
