Camille Thiriet is one of the exciting names in the new generation of Burgundy growers. After gaining experience at Domaine de Bellene with Nicolas Potel, she established Maison Thiriet in 2016 with Canadian winemaker Matt Chittick. Based in Comblanchien, just south of Nuits Saint Georges, the tiny operation has built a loyal following for wines that favour perfume, purity of fruit and a gentle approach in the cellar. Production is small, and the best bottles have become increasingly difficult to find.
En La Place is a named vineyard bottling of Bourgogne Rouge, giving this humble appellation a little more personality than the label might suggest. The 2024 vintage was challenging across Burgundy, with cool, wet conditions and reduced yields, but Pinot Noir from carefully managed vineyards can show lovely fragrance and freshness. Camille's approach favours delicate extraction and restrained oak, allowing the fruit and savoury character of the vineyard to remain at the centre of the wine.
Bright translucent ruby with wild strawberry, sour cherry and raspberry, followed by violet and redcurrant. Blood orange adds a lively citrus note, while subtle clove, black tea and woodland earth develop with air. The palate is light to medium bodied, silky and energetic, with delicate red fruit supported by fresh acidity and fine, gently persistent tannins. Cherry and raspberry move towards orange peel, dried flowers and a faint stony note, finishing fragrant, savoury and beautifully fresh.
Duck and shiitake dumplings would be delicious alongside, while grilled tuna with sesame, mushroom and Comté tart, miso glazed eggplant or roast quail with lentils would all suit its delicate structure. A large Burgundy glass and a little time to open will reveal more of its aromatic detail. There is no need to wait for a grand occasion to enjoy a wine like this.
