Les Chagniots sits on deeper clays here, near Domaine d’Ardhuy. 30% whole bunch vinification. Rich purple, much greater fruit depth, no sign of the stems. There is currently a mini reduction here, but it will be trumped by the beautiful fruit expression behind. Drink from 2027-2029.
89 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
A wider, more vibrant nose, supported by a deeper note of dark fruit. Dark, vibrant, more fluid, extra clarity – oh yes – here’s a super villages. So fine finishing – again a little chalky at the end, but with extra energy and perfume. Bravo!
Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
Les Chagniots comes from a small parcel of 60-year-old vines under the Domaine d’Ardhuy’s Clos des Langres in Corgoloin. The name Chagniots is often cited as a reference to small oak trees, though it also denotes iron-rich minerals in the local patois, so may refer to the thick reddish soils high in iron oxide. This release fermented with 30% bunches, and it is delicious.
Camille Thiriet has quickly become one of the most talked about names among Burgundy’s younger generation of growers. After working with Nicolas Potel at Domaine de Bellene, she established her own venture in 2016 alongside Canadian winemaker Matt Chittick. Based in Comblanchien, between Nuits Saint Georges and Beaune, the domaine has grown from a tiny négociant operation into a collection of carefully tended vineyards. Production remains small, and Camille’s preference for gentle extraction and restrained oak has earned her wines a following well beyond their modest appellations.
Les Chagniots is a named vineyard Bourgogne Rouge, the sort of bottling that makes the regional appellation considerably more interesting. Rather than blending away individual vineyard character, Camille allows the parcel to express its own personality. The difficult 2024 season brought cool temperatures, persistent rain and reduced yields across Burgundy, but also produced Pinot Noir with attractive fragrance, lighter body and refreshing acidity. Les Chagniots leans into that delicacy, with red fruit, floral perfume and a gently earthy undertone.
Bright translucent ruby with wild strawberry, sour cherry and redcurrant, followed by violet and a little raspberry. Blood orange adds freshness, while black tea, clove and subtle woodland notes appear with air. The palate is light to medium bodied, with silky red fruit, lively acidity and delicate, finely grained tannins. Cherry and raspberry give way to citrus peel, dried flowers and a faint stony character, leaving a fragrant, savoury finish that is more about detail than weight.
Duck and mushroom dumplings would make a lovely pairing, while grilled tuna with sesame, roast quail, miso glazed eggplant or porcini and Comté tart would all suit its delicate structure. A slight chill can be surprisingly flattering, particularly if opening it young. This is Burgundy to enjoy for its perfume and subtlety rather than its muscle.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2032.
