2024 Domaine Metrat Terre d'Alizarine Morgon, Beaujolais

Great Morgon doesn't need a grand price tag, and Domaine Métrat's Terre d'Alizarine is a delicious reminder of just how much value Beaujolais can deliver. The Métrat family has deep roots in the region, with Bernard Métrat and his son Sylvain known for producing characterful, traditionally styled Gamay. Their wines celebrate the distinctive personality of Beaujolais' cru vineyards, combining generous fruit, freshness and a lovely savoury edge.

Morgon is one of the most celebrated of the ten Beaujolais crus, renowned for producing Gamay with greater depth and ageing potential than many of its neighbours. The appellation's decomposed granite and schist influenced soils contribute to its distinctive structure. The 2024 vintage favoured a fresher, more elegant style, making this a particularly appealing choice for lovers of vibrant, food friendly reds.

Bright ruby red with violet highlights. Juicy black cherry, raspberry and ripe plum mingle with peony, cracked pepper and a hint of earthy spice. The palate is supple and energetic, with generous red berry fruit, fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Subtle notes of liquorice, dried herbs and crushed stone carry through a lively, savoury finish.

Try it with grilled tuna and tomato salsa, crispy duck with five spice, or roasted beetroot and lentil salad with walnuts. It would also be terrific alongside a rustic mushroom and caramelised onion tart. A slight chill makes it even more appealing on a warm afternoon.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2031. Delicious for its youthful fruit, with enough structure to develop additional savoury complexity.
