‘The king of the red,’ according to technical director Jérôme Flous, this is superb, with a ripe plum and raspberry fruit accented with notes of earth and spice. The texture is lighter and less dense than the 2023, but there is an essential elegance, balance and finesse that is marvellous. Fully ripe with supple tannins, good weight and length, Flous notes that 2024 will be the last vintage with two Chambertin-Clos de Bèze cuvées, as it was obliged to pull up a part of the vineyards, so all the Ouvrées Rodin grapes will be blended into one cuvée.

The 2024 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is a step up over the Charmes-Chambertin with greater depth and complexity, though it is still relatively open-knit compared to other vintages. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, very smooth with a plush and quite sensual finish. Lovely.

Few vineyards in Burgundy command the reverence of Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and Faiveley's Les Ouvrées Rodin is an exceptionally rare expression of this legendary Grand Cru. Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley remains one of Burgundy's great family estates, now led by seventh generation Erwan Faiveley alongside his sister Eve. Their commitment to meticulous vineyard work and sensitive winemaking has helped establish the domaine among the region's finest producers.
Les Ouvrées Rodin comes from a tiny, specially identified parcel within Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin. Named in honour of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, this remarkable Pinot Noir is produced in extremely limited quantities. The limestone rich soils and celebrated Grand Cru terroir create a wine of extraordinary finesse, concentration and ageing potential.
Deep ruby with luminous garnet reflections. Fragrant wild cherry, black raspberry and redcurrant mingle with rose petals, violet, subtle exotic spice and a suggestion of forest floor. The palate is beautifully concentrated yet remarkably graceful, with finely woven tannins, vibrant acidity and an intricate combination of dark fruit, mineral character and delicate savoury notes. The finish is exceptionally persistent, with hints of sandalwood, crushed stone and sweet spice.
For a special occasion, consider roast duck with sour cherries, wild mushroom and chestnut pithivier, or delicately roasted venison with juniper and beetroot. This is a wine deserving of a memorable dinner and plenty of time to reveal its complexity.
Cellaring: 2032 to 2050+. A serious Grand Cru with the structure and concentration for extended cellaring. Patience should be richly rewarded.
