Impressively pure and fresh, this poised red reveals polished tannins—by far the most polished of the Chalonnaise reds—and lilting, mouthwatering acidity. The structure has resolved significantly since I tasted it last November. Sweet spices from the 30 percent new oak lead the nose with the vinous palate backfilling with black currants and black plums. Traces of crushed graphite mingle on the finish. This 2.5-hectare plot of gray marl soils reminds Jérôme of the salinity of Corton. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Apr 2026.

92 points Jasper Morris MW Inside Burgundy

Mercurey has long been the beating heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, producing some of Burgundy's finest value Pinot Noir with a wonderful balance of generosity, structure and finesse. Among its premier cru vineyards, Le Clos du Roy stands as one of the appellation's most highly regarded sites, consistently delivering wines of depth and ageing potential. Maison Joseph Faiveley, founded in 1825, has earned a reputation for translating the distinct character of Burgundy's vineyards into wines of remarkable precision and authenticity.

The Premier Cru vineyard is planted on limestone and clay soils that provide both concentration and freshness, while the excellent 2024 vintage produced fruit of outstanding purity and balance. Gentle extraction and careful maturation in French oak preserve the vineyard's vibrant fruit while adding subtle layers of spice and texture.

Bright ruby with youthful crimson highlights, the bouquet opens with aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and wild raspberry layered with violet, cinnamon and fine cedar. As the wine evolves, notes of forest floor, graphite and earthy spice emerge, bringing added complexity. The palate is beautifully structured, combining concentrated red and dark berry fruits with silky tannins, lively acidity and a finely woven mineral thread. The finish is long, savoury and elegant, lingering with spice, fresh florals and refined oak.

Pair with roast duck, grilled lamb cutlets, beef bourguignon, mushroom pithivier or mature Gruyère. Equally rewarding in its youth or after several years in the cellar, this Premier Cru highlights why Le Clos du Roy is considered one of Mercurey's benchmark vineyards.
