From a classic Montlouis site of limestone and clay, Les Bournais shows a slightly broader, more generous side of Chenin Blanc while still holding that trademark Loire tension. François Chidaine’s biodynamic approach and light touch in the cellar let the vineyard speak clearly, and this cuvée often sits right in the sweet spot between richness and precision.
The 2024 vintage is bright and inviting. Aromatics open with pear, quince and yellow apple, layered with lemon zest and a hint of mandarin. There is a gentle floral lift and a touch of honey and beeswax beginning to emerge, alongside a chalky, mineral thread that keeps everything focused.
On the palate it is medium bodied with a rounded, lightly waxy texture, but there is a fresh line of acidity running through it that gives the wine energy. Orchard fruit moves into more savoury territory, almond, spice and a faint saline edge, finishing long with a clean, mineral grip.
Winemaking follows Chidaine’s usual philosophy, native ferment, minimal intervention and careful élevage, resulting in a wine that feels both expressive and composed.
This is a great match for seafood with a bit of richness. Think grilled prawns with garlic and lemon, seared scallops with a light butter sauce, or roast fish with fennel and herbs. It also works beautifully with dishes like crab linguine, salt cod croquettes, or a simple roast chicken with thyme, the wine’s texture and acidity keeping everything in balance.
Drinking beautifully now for its freshness and charm, it will evolve over the next eight to twelve years, gaining more honeyed and savoury complexity while holding its structure.
