Freycinet Louis Chardonnay is the more approachable sibling to the estate’s flagship Chardonnay, offering a bright, fruit-driven expression that still reflects the cool-climate purity of Tasmania’s east coast. Named after Louis Scherer, one of the early European settlers of the region, the wine is crafted to be fresh, lively and versatile — ideal for earlier drinking but with the finesse you’d expect from Freycinet Vineyard.
Fruit is sourced from younger vines and neighbouring parcels in Bicheno, all benefiting from long sunlight hours, maritime cooling and well-drained soils. Fermentation is in stainless steel with a portion aged briefly in seasoned oak, allowing subtle texture without overt wood influence. There’s no heavy-handed winemaking here — the focus is on vibrancy and clarity.
In the glass, it opens with aromas of white nectarine, lemon blossom, fresh pear and a hint of cashew. The palate is medium bodied, clean and refreshing, with layers of stone fruit, citrus zest and a soft, creamy edge from time on lees. A fine line of acidity drives it through to a crisp, mineral-laced finish.
Food pairing: great with grilled prawns, fish tacos, herbed roast chicken, or a summer salad with peach and feta. Also lovely with simple pasta dishes or a soft-rind cheese.
Cellar potential: best enjoyed in its youth for freshness and brightness, but will hold well for 3 to 4 years.
