Jean-Louis Chavy comes from one of Puligny-Montrachet’s deeply rooted winemaking families, establishing his own domaine after the family holdings were divided in the early 2000s. Today Jean-Louis works alongside his son Paul, crafting beautifully understated wines where vineyard and terroir take centre stage. Their village Puligny-Montrachet is a wonderful introduction to the domaine, drawing on several parcels around the appellation to capture Puligny’s signature combination of citrus, stone and finely judged richness.

The 2024 vintage was demanding in the vineyard, with cool conditions and reduced yields requiring meticulous selection. The best wines have lovely freshness, aromatic clarity and energy rather than excess weight. Chavy’s restrained approach suits the year beautifully, allowing Puligny’s limestone-rich soils to bring tension and a cool mineral character to the wine.

Pale gold with green highlights, the bouquet opens with lemon zest, white peach and crisp pear alongside acacia blossom, fresh almond and a whisper of flint. With air, grapefruit oil, crushed limestone and toasted hazelnut emerge. The palate is sleek and beautifully textured, with citrus and orchard fruit carried by bright acidity and a chalky mineral line. There’s enough flesh through the middle to make it satisfying now, before a long, mouthwatering finish of lemon peel, salted almond and stone.

Bring on grilled scallops with lemon butter, roast chicken with tarragon, crab linguine, grilled John Dory or a bubbling leek and Gruyère tart. For something dangerously simple, a plate of Comté, good baguette and salted butter would make a bottle disappear with indecent speed.

Cellaring: Drink from 2026 to 2036.
