Jean Paul et Charly Thévenet Morgon Tradition Organic is a beautifully pure and energetic expression of Morgon, crafted by one of the region’s most respected father and son teams. The Thévenets farm organically across their old Gamay vineyards in Morgon, working with the same devotion to terroir that has defined their family for generations. The fruit for this cuvée comes from parcels on the gentle slopes surrounding the celebrated Côte du Py, where crumbly schist, decomposed granite and manganese rich soils give Gamay its dark fruited depth and signature mineral edge. The cooler breezes and higher elevation help retain freshness while the ancient soils provide structure and intensity.
The winemaking follows a traditional semi carbonic approach that allows whole bunches to ferment slowly and naturally, preserving perfume, vibrancy and supple tannins. Fermentation takes place without additions, using native yeasts, and the wine is aged in older French barrels and concrete to maintain purity. The domaine’s organic farming and gentle handling create a wine that carries the hallmark Thévenet balance of brightness and savoury depth. It is crafted with the intention of being expressive and approachable in its youth while still carrying enough structure to age gracefully.
In the glass it shines a vivid ruby. The nose is lifted and inviting with aromas of ripe red cherry, raspberry and cranberry alongside subtle notes of violet, crushed stone, spice and a touch of wild herb. As it breathes, the bouquet becomes more layered, showing hints of plum skin, licorice, dried flowers and gentle earthiness that reflect its mineral rich soils.
The palate is fresh, silky and beautifully composed. Juicy red fruits flow across the tongue supported by fine, lightly grippy tannins and lively acidity. Flavours of cherry, strawberry compote, pomegranate, subtle spice, cocoa and a stony mineral thread build through the mid palate. The finish is long, clean and delicately savoury with lingering red fruit brightness and a whisper of earth. It is a wonderfully versatile Morgon, delicious young but capable of developing more depth over five to eight years.
Pair it with roast chicken, duck confit, pork loin with herbs, grilled lamb cutlets, mushroom ragù, charcuterie, Comté cheese or vegetable dishes like ratatouille or grilled peppers. Its freshness also makes it a great match for tomato based pastas and mild spice.
