A perfumed and nicely focused riesling from 54/46% Coal River Valley/Tamar Valley grapes. Pale in the glass with a flash of green, with aromas of lime, green apple and grapefruit. Hints of lifted blossom, freshly sliced fennel, clover, crushed stone, ozone and sea spray. I love the focus in this wine but there is a generosity to that citrus core and a mineral cadence that is mesmerising.

Josef Chromy Riesling is a pure, cool climate expression that shows just how well Northern Tasmania suits the variety. Grown in the Tamar Valley, the vineyards enjoy long daylight hours, cold nights and a slow ripening season that locks in natural acidity and aromatic clarity. Basalt influenced soils contribute a fine mineral edge, giving the wine shape and drive rather than simple fruitiness.
The Josef Chromy estate was established in the early 2000s with a clear vision of producing premium cool climate wines. Riesling has always been an important part of the range, made in a precise, dry style that highlights site and freshness. The winemaking approach is clean and restrained, allowing the purity of the fruit and the regional character to shine through.
In the glass, the wine is bright and focused. Lime zest, lemon juice and green apple lead the way, with hints of white florals and a subtle talc like minerality. The palate is crisp and linear, driven by vibrant acidity and finishing clean and dry. It feels energetic and refreshing, but with enough substance to reward attention.
At the table, this is a wonderfully versatile Riesling. It pairs beautifully with fresh seafood, Asian inspired dishes, salads or light vegetarian fare. It drinks very well now for its vibrancy, but it will also reward cellaring over five to ten years, developing classic toast and lime marmalade complexity while retaining its cool climate tension.
