2025 Josef Chromy Pinot Gris, Northern Tasmania

Josef Chromy Pinot Gris is a lovely expression of Northern Tasmania’s cool climate, sitting in that sweet spot between generosity and freshness. The vineyards are based in the Tamar Valley, where long daylight hours, cool nights and a slow ripening season allow Pinot Gris to build flavour while holding onto natural acidity. Basalt and sandy loam soils contribute texture and a subtle savoury edge that keeps the wine grounded and food friendly.

The Josef Chromy estate is one of Tasmania’s modern success stories. Established in the early 2000s, it was built on Josef Chromy’s belief that Tasmania could produce world class cool climate wines. Pinot Gris has become one of the estate’s quiet stars, made in a style that favours balance and drinkability rather than overt sweetness or excess weight.

In the glass, the wine shows pear, apple and white stone fruit, with gentle spice and a hint of almond. The palate is soft and rounded, but there is enough acidity to keep it lively and fresh. It is textured without being heavy, finishing clean with a subtle mineral note that reflects its cool climate origins.

At the table, this is incredibly versatile. It works beautifully with seafood, light Asian dishes, roast chicken or creamy pasta, and it is equally enjoyable on its own.
