From the cool, maritime vineyards of Pipers River in northern Tasmania comes a Pinot Gris that balances texture with freshness. Pipers Brook Vineyard was established in 1974 by Dr Andrew Pirie, one of the pioneers who helped build Tasmania’s global reputation for cool climate varieties. The estate benefits from long daylight hours, steady sea breezes and a slow ripening season, allowing Pinot Gris to develop flavour depth while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Sandy loam over clay soils provide structure and minerality, shaping a style that is both expressive and precise.
Pale straw with a soft copper hue typical of Pinot Gris, the aromatics are generous yet refined. Nashi pear, ripe apple and white peach rise from the glass, layered with hints of spice and a delicate floral lift. There is a subtle mineral freshness that speaks of its coastal origin.
On the palate it is medium bodied with a gently rounded, almost silky texture. Orchard fruit and citrus glide across balanced acidity, giving both richness and line. A faint savoury note and touch of spice add complexity, leading to a clean, persistent finish with lingering pear and citrus peel. It is Pinot Gris with both generosity and poise.
Pair with roast pork, grilled prawns, creamy pasta, sushi or soft cheeses. Delicious in its youth for its vibrancy and fruit expression, it will also cellar comfortably for five to seven years, developing greater texture and subtle honeyed nuance.
