From the cool maritime vineyards of northern Tasmania comes a Gewurztraminer that shows both aromatic generosity and crisp regional precision. Pipers Brook Vineyard, established in 1974 by Dr Andrew Pirie, was one of the pioneering estates that helped place Tasmania firmly on the fine wine map. The Pipers River region’s long daylight hours, cool nights and steady sea breezes create ideal conditions for aromatic varieties, allowing slow flavour development while preserving bright natural acidity. Gewurztraminer thrives here, retaining perfume without becoming overly opulent.
Pale straw with a faint golden tint, the aromatics are expressive and beautifully lifted. Lychee, rose petal and Turkish delight rise from the glass, layered with ginger spice, citrus peel and subtle floral notes. There is a freshness and purity that reflect the cool coastal climate.
On the palate it is medium bodied with a gently rounded texture balanced by vibrant acidity. Flavours of pear, mandarin and exotic spice glide across the palate, supported by a clean, refreshing line that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and aromatic, lingering with rosewater, ginger and a delicate mineral edge.
Pair with Thai green curry, Vietnamese fresh rolls, spicy pork dishes or washed rind cheeses. Best enjoyed over the next three to five years to capture its aromatic vibrancy and balance.
