2024 Moorilla Praxis Chardonnay Musque, Tamar Valley

From Moorilla’s Tamar Valley plantings, this is Chardonnay seen through a slightly more aromatic, playful lens. Chardonnay Musqué is a rare clone known for its lifted perfume and exotic edge, and in Tasmania’s cool climate it takes on a beautifully refined expression. Moorilla, established in 1958 and now part of the Mona world, continues to explore these small pockets of individuality through the Praxis range, where experimentation meets precision.

The Tamar Valley’s long, cool growing season allows flavour to build slowly while retaining that fine line of acidity. With Musqué, the aromatics are naturally heightened, but here they are kept in check by the region’s restraint, resulting in a wine that feels expressive without tipping into excess.

Pale straw with a green shimmer, the nose is immediately engaging. White peach, nectarine and citrus blossom lead, followed by hints of tropical fruit, jasmine and a gentle spice. There is a floral lift that sets it apart from more classic Chardonnay expressions.

The palate balances that aromatic generosity with structure. Stone fruit and citrus glide across a softly textured frame, with a touch of creaminess from lees work.
