Out on the edge of the Derwent River at MONA, Moorilla has always done things a little differently. Founded in 1958 and now under the custodianship of David Walsh, the estate blends art, architecture and wine in a way few others attempt. The Praxis range is where the winemaking team, led by Conor van der Reest, gets to push a bit further, exploring detail, texture and a more thoughtful expression of Tasmania’s cool climate.
Northern Tasmania gives Sauvignon Blanc a very different voice to the louder Marlborough style. The 2024 Praxis leans into restraint and precision, opening with grapefruit, lemon zest and green apple, backed by a subtle lift of white blossom. There is a faint herbal edge, fresh cut grass and a touch of nettle, but it is dialled back, allowing a more mineral, almost saline character to come through.
The palate is finely tuned, with bright acidity giving it a crisp, linear feel. Citrus and orchard fruit carry through with clarity, supported by a gentle texture that suggests some time on lees. It finishes dry and clean, with a lingering mineral note and just a hint of savoury grip that keeps it interesting.
Winemaking is handled with a light touch, stainless steel preserving freshness while careful lees work adds a little weight and complexity without softening the wine’s natural tension.
This is a natural with fresh, clean flavours. Oysters, sashimi, grilled prawns or a simple goat’s cheese salad all work beautifully, and it pairs just as well with herb driven dishes where that subtle green edge can play along. Think cool air off the river, a plate of seafood, and something bright and relaxed in the background, maybe a bit of early Phoenix or a laid back indie track that matches the wine’s clarity and quiet energy.
