Murdoch Hill Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills is a bright, modern white that captures the cool-climate vibrancy and precision the region is known for. Grown on elevated vineyards near Oakbank and Lenswood, the fruit benefits from chilly nights, rocky soils and a long, even ripening season. This allows for exceptional natural acidity and detailed flavour development.
Winemaker Michael Downer, widely recognised for his deft touch with Chardonnay, takes a refined, low-intervention approach. Fruit is handpicked, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in French oak barrels, with a small portion undergoing malolactic fermentation. The result is a beautifully balanced wine that leans more toward purity and freshness than overt oak richness.
Expect aromas of white nectarine, citrus blossom and struck flint, layered with hints of nougat and toasted almond. The palate is clean and focused, with lemon curd, peach and fine mineral notes wrapped in a creamy yet tight frame. There’s a lovely chalky texture and a persistent line of acidity that gives the wine length and drive.
Food pairings include pan-seared scallops with cauliflower purée, grilled chicken with lemon and thyme, or ricotta gnocchi with sage butter. Aged parmesan or creamy goat cheese also work brilliantly. Best enjoyed young and vibrant but can cellar well for up to 5 years.
