From bush vines above the Willunga Basin. The same making as the year prior, with 30% whole bunches and eight months in older barrels. And although this was a warmer year on paper, the wine maybe feels a little lighter, which is neither here nor there. There’s also a little more of the white pepper, bay and dried herbal lift accenting the red and black cherries, cranberries and redcurrant gel. Again, tannins are deftly extracted, fine but resolute, made for food. This is very good, and fine value.

From the sandy coastal plains of McLaren Vale, Paxton Grenache offers a pure, vibrant take on one of the region’s most expressive varieties, shaped by organic and biodynamic farming and a strong sense of site. Paxton Wines has long been a leader in sustainable viticulture, with vineyards farmed biodynamically to promote vine balance, soil health and natural expression. Grenache thrives in these conditions, particularly in McLaren Vale’s warm days and cooling sea breezes, which help preserve perfume, freshness and fine tannin structure. The result is a wine that leans into brightness and spice rather than weight, showing a more modern, lifted style of Grenache.

Bright ruby in colour with a crimson edge, the aromas lift with red cherry, raspberry and strawberry, layered with rose petal, white pepper and subtle dried herb notes. The palate is medium bodied and energetic, offering juicy red fruit, silky tannins and a fresh acid line that keeps everything light on its feet. There is a gentle savoury grip and a slightly earthy undertone through the finish, adding complexity and making it a natural partner for food. It is brilliant with lamb kofta, grilled pork, Mediterranean vegetable dishes, chargrilled octopus or tomato based pasta. Drinking beautifully now for its vibrancy and charm, it will cellar confidently for five to eight years, developing more savoury spice and earthy nuance while retaining its fresh, lifted core.
