Philip Shaw No.17 Merlot Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon from Orange is a refined cool climate Bordeaux style blend created by one of Australia’s most respected winemakers. Philip Shaw has been a major figure in Australian wine for decades, previously serving as chief winemaker at Rosemount Estate where he helped shape some of the country’s most successful wines. In 1988 he purchased the historic Koomooloo property just outside Orange, one of Australia’s highest and coolest wine regions, where vineyards sit around 900 metres above sea level on ancient volcanic soils. The estate takes its name from Shaw’s original residence number at Rosemount, and the No.17 range reflects his pursuit of elegant, site driven wines that highlight the freshness and purity of Orange fruit. The blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to capture the classic harmony of Bordeaux varieties while expressing the lifted aromatics and natural acidity that come from Orange’s cool nights and long growing season.

Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with fragrant aromas of blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry layered with violet, dried herbs and a touch of cedar and spice. Merlot brings generous fruit and supple texture, Cabernet Franc adds perfume and savoury complexity, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure and depth. The palate is medium to full bodied with ripe black fruit, cassis and hints of mocha and tobacco supported by fine tannins and bright acidity that keeps the wine lively and balanced. It finishes long and elegant with subtle spice and a gentle earthy note that reflects the region’s volcanic soils. This versatile red pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled venison, slow cooked beef cheeks or mushroom and lentil dishes. It will drink beautifully now but also has the structure to evolve gracefully for eight to twelve years in the cellar.
