2024 Philip Shaw Small Batch Riesling, Orange

Grown on Philip Shaw's high-altitude Koomooloo vineyard, the 2024 Small Batch Riesling is tense, fresh and long, with lime, lemon peel and white peach on the nose lifted by a twist of honeysuckle. A touch of textural richness sits alongside gentle, balanced sweetness, carrying through to an energetic, lingering finish.

This wine continues a run of vintages that has made this one of Orange's most consistently rewarding Rieslings. It is a natural match for delicately spiced dishes, try with grilled prawns and a green mango and herb salad, or a mild fish curry with lime leaf and coconut.

This Riesling is a blend of two components: one wild fermented in large 600L demi-muid oak barrels, the other with select German yeast strains in stainless steel. A small portion was aged in a well-seasoned French oak barrique.

The 2024 vintage was warm and dry, with a good quality harvest across all varieties, even if the yields were on the lower side.

Philip Shaw Wines was founded by Philip Shaw — twice International Winemaker of the Year and former chief winemaker at Rosemount and Southcorp — on the Koomooloo Vineyard in Orange at 900 metres above sea level on volcanic red loam over limestone. His son Daniel Shaw, trained across wineries in Burgundy, Montepulciano and Chianti, now leads the winemaking. The European influence is audible in the wines: restrained, site-driven and built for the table rather than the show bench. Three tiers — the Number Series, Character Series and Misfits — give the range breadth without diluting the house philosophy.
