A most intriguing and even slightly exotic Chardonnay from the Lenswood sub-region in the Adelaide Hills, fermentation was in French oak with wild yeasts. The fruit was a combination of whole bunch and destemmed. Maturation was for nine months with 55% of the oak new. Very pale lemon in colour, the nose opens with hints of oatmeal, along with citrus, stone fruits, glacéd lemon, spices and hints of nectarine. This is balanced, sleek and with an appealingly supple texture. There is bright acidity and a long lingering finish with persistence. Tightly structured, this is well crafted and will provide pleasure for the next five to eight years. A cracking Lenswood Chardonnay.

High in the cool elevated vineyards of the Adelaide Hills, Pike & Joyce has quickly established a reputation for producing elegant and expressive wines that capture the character of the region. The winery was founded by the Joyce family together with Andrew Pike of the well known Pike family of winemakers. Their vineyard at Lenswood sits at altitude where cool nights, gentle sunlight and long ripening conditions allow Chardonnay to develop intensity while retaining vibrant natural acidity. The Kay Reserve Chardonnay represents one of the premium expressions from the estate, named in honour of Kay Joyce and crafted from carefully selected parcels of fruit from the best vineyard blocks.
The wine shows a pale gold colour with bright green reflections. Aromas open with white peach, nectarine and lemon zest layered with grapefruit, roasted hazelnut and subtle oak spice. As the wine evolves in the glass further notes of almond, brioche and delicate flinty minerality begin to appear. The palate is rich yet beautifully balanced with flavours of citrus, stone fruit and toasted nuts supported by lively acidity and a fine mineral thread. Careful oak maturation brings texture and depth while preserving the freshness that defines Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. The finish is long, refined and persistent.
This style of Chardonnay works beautifully with grilled lobster, seared scallops, roast chicken with herbs or creamy seafood dishes where the wine’s texture and acidity complement the richness of the food.
