From one of Tasmania’s pioneering cool climate estates comes a Chardonnay that reflects the clarity and restraint of the island’s north. Pipers Brook Vineyard was established in 1974 by Dr Andrew Pirie, one of the visionaries who helped shape Tasmania’s global reputation for fine sparkling wine and Chardonnay. Located in the Pipers River region, the vineyard benefits from a maritime climate, long daylight hours and a slow ripening season that builds flavour while preserving vibrant natural acidity. Sandy loam over clay soils provide both drainage and structure, allowing Chardonnay to show finesse rather than weight.
Pale straw with bright green highlights, the aromatics are lifted and refined. White peach, nectarine and lemon zest unfold alongside grapefruit pith, subtle cashew and a gentle flinty edge. There is a clean mineral thread that reflects the cool coastal environment and careful winemaking.
On the palate it is medium bodied and beautifully balanced. Stone fruit and citrus glide across a backbone of fresh acidity, while thoughtful lees work adds a creamy texture without heaviness. Oak influence is discreet, shaping the wine with subtle spice and structure rather than dominance. The finish is long, clean and lightly saline, lingering with lemon curd and toasted almond nuance. It is classic Tasmanian Chardonnay with energy and composure.
Pair with grilled scallops, roast chicken with tarragon, lobster with herb butter or creamy mushroom risotto. Enjoy now for its freshness and brightness, or cellar confidently for eight to twelve years as it develops nutty complexity and layered depth.
